The National Horse Show is now in its second day at Tryon International. The prize money starts small this week and climbs toward the end. The $10,000 Adult Amateur Hunter Classic comes on Saturday, and the $100,000 Grand Prix and the ASPCA Maclay final come the following weekend. That second weekend is also Halloween weekend in downtown Tryon. If you live in Tryon, Columbus or Mill Spring, the show's quietest days are this week, and its biggest days fall on the town's busiest four days of the fall.
The Tryon Daily Bulletin reported in February that the National Horse Show would move from the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington to Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring. That ended a run of more than a decade in Kentucky for a show with 143 years of history. The show is best known for its years at Madison Square Garden. It has moved before, to the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey in 1989 and to Syracuse from 2008 to 2010. US Equestrian approved the move on April 9, 2026.
The reasons organizers gave are about evenings. In the same Bulletin story, they said Tryon's on-site lodging and dining should help attendance at evening classes. Chairman William H. Weeks described the new location as the best chance to put the show on a sustainable financial footing. So the show was built to keep visitors on the grounds after dark. Those evenings now fall during the last week of October.
Here are the marquee classes from the show's tentative schedule. The ones locals are most likely to hear about are listed by date.
| Date | Class | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Sat, Oct 24 | $10,000 Adult Amateur Hunter Classic | Week 1 feature |
| Sun, Oct 25 | NHS 3'3" Equitation Championship | Week 1 close |
| Tue, Oct 27 | $10,000 Young / Green Hunter Championship | Week 2 opener |
| Thu, Oct 29 | $75,000 Hunter Classic, Round 1 | Hunter feature |
| Sat, Oct 31 | $100,000 National Standard 1.45m Grand Prix | Jumper feature |
| Sun, Nov 1 | ASPCA Maclay National Championship, final round | Show finale |
Week 1 is mostly equitation. Today, Thursday, October 22, the adult equitation championships run for three age groups. Junior equitation classes fill Friday and Saturday. Week 2 is when the prize money goes up. The top purse rises tenfold from this Saturday's $10,000 hunter classic to next Saturday's $100,000 Grand Prix. The jumper side also builds that week, with a $10,000 1.30m Speed Stake on Thursday, a $20,000 1.40m Speed Stake on Friday, and a $20,000 1.35m Open Jumper Classic just before the Grand Prix on Saturday.
Each day's listing starts at 7:00 or 7:30 a.m. The schedule doesn't give a start time for each class, and the show says the order may still change. Every class runs in the Indoor Complex.
Tryon Fall 6, the last week of the six-week Tryon Fall Series, runs at TIEC alongside the National Horse Show from October 21 to 25. That series is listed as free and open to spectators. On Saturday, October 24, Tryon's Saturday Night Lights advertises free entry, a Trunk-or-Treat from 5 to 7 p.m., and Grand Prix show jumping at about 7 p.m. That Grand Prix belongs to the venue's own series. The NHS schedule doesn't list it as an NHS class.
That same Saturday, the Foothills Fantasy Festival runs at Rogers Park on West Howard Street from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Tryon Daily Bulletin reported in July that the park had closed temporarily so crews could remove a fallen limb and check tree safety. Over on Hunting Country Road, FENCE lists the Harmon Classic for October 23 through 25.
On Saturday, the hunter classic runs in the morning at Mill Spring, the festival runs all day at Rogers Park, and the Trunk-or-Treat and night jumping start at dusk at TIEC. This weekend's events are spread across the county. Next weekend's are packed closer together.
The National Horse Show's biggest stretch is October 29 through November 1. Downtown Tryon has its own events on each of those days.
Tryon International sits off Exit 170 on US Highway 74. On Halloween, three separate events share that exit.
So Fall Fest and the cross-country races overlap in the morning, and the jumper classes run later. The venue hasn't posted a combined traffic or parking plan for the day. Only the SoCon page gives parking instructions. Tryon's visitor FAQ says general admission and general parking are free. It also says special events may charge for parking and offer VIP parking, and the NHS listings don't give their own ticket or parking policy. Check tryon.com before you head out on Saturday. The same FAQ warns that rideshare is limited in the area.
The crowd also stays beyond the venue. A March notice from the show's publicists asked exhibitors to book lodging early. Along with TIEC's on-site rooms, it named partner hotels in Forest City, the Holiday Inn Express and the Hampton Inn. Some show traffic will be coming from the east on US-74 on those mornings and heading back that way at night.
If you'd rather skip the parking, the show's prize list names Clip My Horse as the livestream provider for Week 2. That covers the Hunter Classic, the Grand Prix and the Maclay final. You could watch the Grand Prix at home on Halloween afternoon and still be on Trade Street when the evening starts.
The show ends Sunday, November 1, and the area's horse calendar moves straight into hunt season. On Saturday, November 7, the 15th annual Tryon Beer Fest is at 22 Depot Street. The same day, Tryon Hounds holds its Masters' Hunt Breakfast. Its Barn Tour follows on November 8, and the Opening Hunt and Blessing of the Hounds is on November 26. Tryon Hounds says its social events are for members and invited guests. The second Saturday Art Stroll returns downtown on November 14.
